Development Studies
Konnichiwa! (Hello!) My name is Hiroaki Okumura, the Student Ambassador for Japan. I am from Fukuoka which is located in the northern part of the island of Kyushu (very hot and humid place!) I am sophomore in the school of Development Studies.
I set off my UK life with one-year foundation course at UEA. As most of international students do feel anxious about setting up new life in strange place, I was also worrying about being homesick, especially in the place that is quarter distance of the world away from my country. Although I sometimes missed mild climate of Kyusyu (Norwich is much colder and dryer!), it did not take so long to realise that it was a groundless fear. I believe that this course helped me a lot not only preparing for undergraduate degree with providing basic knowledge of Business, Economics, Math, Statistics and well-organised English lessons but also to be independent of my parents.
Then, I proceeded to do Development Studies. This course internationally gains high reputation and is well known as a base of ODG (Overseas Development Group). I currently enjoy my study in truly international atmosphere. Studying in UK Universities is tough (not only because of assignments), but you will find that your every effort reflects straight to result. You can produce fruit as much as you work hard. There are some other subjects which have remarkable accomplishments. Those will give you wider choices for your study and jobs in the future.
You also might be worrying about social life in UEA and Norwich!? According to my experience, I have never been bored since I came here! There are variety of events such as parties and gigs held almost every weekends. If you like to enjoy alcohol, Norwich is the city of most variety of pubs in England and there are three pubs even on campus. For big fan of sports, UEA Sports Park will content you with its modern conveniences. And, you can pop out England top 5 biggest shopping centre in the weekends. As long as I know, there are two Chinese food shops dealing in some Japanese stuff in city centre. It would be great experience to join Student Union Societies. Those are like club activities in Japanese universities.
From all aspects above, UEA is ready to meet you with warm welcome. Please feel free to e-mail me regarding to any questions for your future life at UEA. You could write in English or in Japanese if you prefer. I am very much looking forward to seeing you soon!
I studied Strategic Information Systems at a graduate school, which belongs to a management school. I chose UEA because of its high ratings of the school. The quality of teaching is important to choose a school because it gives me a good understanding of the study. The internet is accessible on campus and I find the blackboard intranet system at the university is very useful. It helps students to organise the entire class schedule and also check the real-time information updated by each class. It also gives me the opportunities to communicate with professors and other students freely.
I like living on campus because I can meet many people from different backgrounds. I can have a close access to classes, a library, a pub and also many of the gatherings. The campus has a beautiful lake and I often walk around the nature between my studying. Norwich is a historical city and there are many old beautiful churches. Especially, I love the Norwich cathedral. It is worth visiting many times!
